Finished – Wilfred (US) : Season 1

Wilfred (US)This was a very strange but refreshingly funny remake of the original series from Australia about a young man struggling with life who sees the neighbour's dog as a man in a cheap dog suit. The "dog", Wilfred, hands out advice on life to Ryan (played by Elijah "Frodo Baggins" Wood) with hilarious consequences. As I said, weird, but clever adult humour. Roll on Season 2 :-)

5 Mobile Phones – Seriously?!

I don't normally make a habit of collecting mobile phones, and this is purely a one-off situation that is only going to last a couple of weeks. I now find myself with five, yes 5, mobile phones. The reason? The simply wonderful HP Pre 3. That is phone number 4. Oh, here's the list...

  1. Nokia 6600 Slide (just for the great autofocus camera)
  2. Palm Pre Plus (my current phone)
  3. HP/Palm Pre 2 (bought because everyone thought the Pre 3 would never be released)
  4. HP Pre 3 (oh, then HP changed their mind and now everyone wants one)
  5. Samsung Galaxy SII (which was free with an O2 contract upgrade)

So, now you see why I come to have 5 mobile phones... silly, but typical for a gadget geek like me. :-)

Movie Seen – Resident Evil

Resident EvilThis film was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have never played the computer game it is based on, but the movie adaptation ticked along nicely. There are plenty of neat slow motion action sequences with some nice sets - overall: not bad at all! Do I want to see the next 3 films in the series? Actually, yes... :-)

Movie Seen – Saw VII

Saw 7I have been a faithful Saw fan and was very interested to see how they would end a pretty neat series. The thing is, you have to look passed the gore and the wicked traps to get to the story. There are some nice ideas there, but this final chapter left me wanting more. It answered some questions, but it did not have the wow ending I was hoping for... unlike Saw I and Saw II - which left me smiling and nodding in content. Saw VII was a bit of a half-hearted attempt and did not show the usual flair the writers have made fans with. Shame, but at least it's... "Game over." :-)

Movie Seen – Disturbia

DisturbiaI like a good thriller and I liked this one a lot. I did not know anything about it, but had obviously seen Shia "Transformers" LaBeouf, David Morse, Carrie-Anne "Matrix" Moss and Sarah "The Event" Roemer before. The director D.J.Caruso has also helmed some good movies, including I Am Number Four, Eagle Eye and the TV Series The Shield. The film ticked along very nicely, with excellent performances from Shia and Sarah. It reminded me of the movie Pacific Heights, with it's brooding build up of tension. All-in-all, a first rate thriller and it has confirmed that Shia LaBeouf is a fine actor indeed. Watch it, soon.

Learnt – MythTV Recording Groups

In MythTV you can put parental controls on what videos your family can watch, and you can also specify (out of the 4 levels) what default level is shown. This can also be done with recordings as well, using a feature called Recording Groups. Keep the 'Default' recording group as your lowest level (for showing to the kids) and then create some more - like 'Teens' and 'Adults'.

Media Library → Watch Recordings → Highlight Episode → M → Storage Groups → Change Recording Group → Add New → Adults

The recording will then disappear from the list. To view it, to do this...

Media Library → Watch Recordings → M → Change Group Filter → Adults

Just remember to put in back to the Default again.

Media Library → Watch Recordings → M → Change Group Filter → Default

Movie Seen – Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo & JulietHhhmm... wherefore art thou good movie? It hath left under yonder credits. I spent most of my time trying to guess the actors' voices. If you like Gnomes, you'll like this... a lot. I don't really like Gnomes, so... moving on.

Movie Seen – Mirrors

MirrorsI only watched this because I recorded it from a terrestrial broadcast. It had some nice imagery but was just way too predictable for my liking... I got bored about 30 minutes in. Quite why Kiefer Sutherland decided to do this is beyond me. Avoid.

Movie Seen – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates 4You'd think that this was a safe bet, and you'd be right me hearties. I was looking forward to this, even though there was no Keira Knightley (for the guys) or Orlando Bloom (for the girls) to swoon over. There is however, Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz so the screen had "talent". The director Rob Marshall did an alright job of steering the stars on their quest for the fountain of youth. There was a lot more 'chat' and backgound in this film compared to the first 3, which didn't go down too well with the children. Mr Depp steals the show again - but let's face it, that's his job. My favourite moments were the 'ships in bottles', the 'cake eating' fight and the simply brilliant last scene with Jack and Gibbs... oh, and don't leave during the credits - you'll miss a neat bit after them ;-) Overall? My buckle was swashed. Not great, but not bad and has a few things to keep you wanting more - roll on 5 and 6!
